Why Meatless?

tile_why_meatless_green

Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.

Read about these benefits below. But keep in mind that just going meatless is not enough. That’s why we give you the information you need to add healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free alternatives to your diet each week. Further, if you do eat meat on other days, we strongly recommend grass-fed, hormone-free, locally-raised options whenever possible.

Health Benefits

Environmental Benefits

  • REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions that are accelerating climate change worldwide . . . far more than transportation. And annual worldwide demand for meat continues to grow. Reining in meat consumption once a week can help slow this trend.
  • MINIMIZE WATER USAGE. The water needs of livestock are tremendous, far above those of vegetables or grains. An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Soy tofu produced in California requires 220 gallons of water per pound.
  • HELP REDUCE FOSSIL FUEL DEPENDENCE. On average, about 40 calories of fossil fuel energy go into every calorie of feed lot beef in the U.S. Compare this to the 2.2 calories of fossil fuel energy needed to produce one calorie of plant-based protein. Moderating meat consumption is a great way to cut fossil fuel demand.

Do you do it !!? Which meal is your favorite ?

LOL .. yeah !!! when I go to a party w Latinos I don't eat pork because I can't they all look at me weird but my mom never ever had pork ... My mom made a lot of chicken and fish and red meat sometimes...

My husband is Irish, Polish , German  so they love meat ... but sorry !!! I'm the one cooking .. I'm the one buying the food .. HA HA HA!!!

Quoting Poodles:

I think going meatless is harder for Latinos.  South Americans are known for their love of beef.  My husband is Mexican and he is definitely a meat and potatoes/beans kind of guy.

I am from Norwegian roots on my mama's side, where I think there are traditionally more fish eaters.  I do not like fish, but I don't think I'm programed to eat meat like a Latin person.

Going vegetarian sounds very appealing to me.  I'm getting so I don't even want to eat chicken.  I'm very happy with stir fried veggies and brown rice for my meal.

Exactly!  Hubby is balking at eating less meat, but you're right, I'm the one doing the cooking!  lol

I do a few vegeterian meals but we eat a lot of chicken and seafood

Meat hurts my Stomach especially since my gallbladder was taken out. I need to learn vegetarian dishes I think it would be easier on my stomach

Congratulations! / ¡Felicidades!

Great idea!!! My hubby was very bad .. his mom made pork for them every day for dinner ... so when we got together was a big shock ... I  think he goes and have a burger for lunch a lot LOL   but he is learning :)

Quoting Poodles:

 Excellent!

Yes, we do MM, and I'm trying to get my hubby on board with more than once a week.  I told him last night that I'm not going to add the hamburger to our Mexican meals that call for re-fried beans. JUST the beans now.  I don't think he'll miss it too much.

I also have started fish or seafood on Friday night---salmon, crab and shrimp mostly cuz I don't eat fishy fish.  Doing Fish Friday helps too, not only our bodies, but the environment.  The less beef we consume the less cows to feed and kill.

Pork is suppose to be a leaner meat.  I don't eat pork (except for a little bacon and sometimes ham).  I can't stand the taste of pork chops or roasts.
