How do you help a constipated baby??

I know it's normal for newborns to grunt and fuss when they try to pass a bowel movement, but what can you do for him when he starts showing signs of constipation? My baby gets super red and fussy when he tries to poop...makes me sad! He's too young for medicine, but I've heard an ounce or two of water can help. Any experience?

My oldest baby was chronically constipated and the doctor suggested a simple solution that helped ALOT: Take a Q-tip and put the tip in her butt (sorry, not trying to be funny lol).  But it really worked.  The doctor said that doing that stimulated the muscles in the anus to start working harder.  Of course it has to be done very gently.  Good luck!

Is he formula feed? Sometimes that happens when they have formula. To help him rub his tummy gently and give him half an ounce of water too much water for a baby that small can be dangerous. If he is still having problems take him to the doc.

My son was breastfeed on his first year and he used to ve constipated a lot so bad it will make him bleed, i tried all remedies, prune juice, water, etc.. Nothing works when it got really bad i have to used a suppository that broke my heart so i decided to watch his diet so i used theBRAT diet NO

Bananas

 Rice

Applesauce

Toast ...

If it gets too bad your peditrician can give you medicine that you mix with water or juice to help him/her...

Good Luck!!!!

Thanks - appreciate the feedback. I did hear that using a rectal thermometer could help too!

Thanks Laura -- he is breastfed so it may be something I'm eating!! Didn't think about that -- I'll have to try the BRAT diet (I do have a banana a day so maybe that isn't helping :(

Unfortunately I can't give him any food yet (only 6 weeks old) -- but will keep that in mind as he grows!
