Green Home: Manual lawn mowers/ Casa Verde: Cortadoras de césped manuales
- 2 Replies
A conventional gas powered lawn mower emits on average nearly 90 pounds of carbon dioxide and over 50 pounds of other pollutants into our air every year according to the USA EPA. A manual reel mower could be ideal. After all, why waste money and travel related emissions going to the gym when you can work those muscles and be productive at the same time - in a sense, it's exercising for the environment!

I bought one of these a couple months ago when we started having to keep up with the yard after winter was over. Having moved into the house in December we didn't worry about the grass until spring started and we noticed it needed tending to.
I opted for this type because the price was certainly better than spending over $100 on a gas or electric one, plus having the expense of buying the gas or paying higher electric. Plus I figured it was better for the environment. It certainly is a nice workout on the arms, but one thing I really like is that my boys can handle it easily & they're only 9 & 8 years old. They've been asking to mow the lawn every week because they like being able to maneuver this mower. If we had gas or electric one I'm sure I wouldn't think of letting them do it, for fear of them getting badly injure, or them breaking the mower not knowing how to properly turn it on, etc.
Funny thing is, it was an older man who helped me when I walked into Home Depot looking for it & he said "oh you want the old school type". Umm, to not make myself seem older than what I am, I'd like to think I was simply "going green", lol. ;)
