What is it your cue to move out? // ¿Cual es tu indicación para mudarse?

My family lives in a very quiet suburb neighborhood. The inner city is about a 15 minute drive from us so it's convenient and we avoid trouble. Well, a few weeks ago, we heard a very familiar sound....the paletero. Quite a few have been walking by. That only means one thing for us--TIME TO MOVE!

Since we grew up in the hood that was once a quiet area, we know the patterns that will follow: the elote man, bigger families moving near, loud cars, stolen property, etc. We moved here several years ago to avoid all of that. Hopefully these were isolated times but we know they only come around to satisfy a bigger group of customers.

When do you know it's time to move?

I was born in 1987 in San Jose Ca.  Moved to Hollister Ca.  It was great.  We had friends over all the time.  My mom made us all lunch.  Watched movies.  Had pool parties.  The amount of friends we had in the house, people thought my mom owned a daycare.  Our house was close to parks.  We rode our bikes.  It was fun and friendly till about 1995.  Hollister was just starting with gangs.  My dad who was a retired cop at the time decided to move to Mariposa Ca.  A small town outside of Yosemite park.  My mom wasn't crazy of the idea because I was in 2nd grade and my brother was in 1st grade.  But eventually she gave in.  Here we are 2012 and I am married.  My brother is married too and living in Germany because of his Military duties.  My mom never looked back.  And you know what?  I made a lot more friends here then when I was in Hollister.  I keep in touch with some friends and hearing stories of my once town Hollister sends chills up and down my back.  Their high schools have the cops their all the time.  Stabbings and shootings.  Girls dress trashy.  Guys dress in low shorts.  And it makes me so blessed and thankful to go to bed at night and hear crickets chirping and other nature sounds instead of bang bang.  It's so nice to go into town and everyone knows you instead of you looking them wrong in the city and fearing for your life of getting jumped.

You know it's time to move when it gets bad, and only if your kids are young like how I was.  Young is good because they can easily adjust to new surroundings. If they are already older then it's to late.

When you see your neighbors chillin outside the house on broke down vehicles at all hours of the day and night. That is when you should know that no good will come to living there.

That's how it happened with my family when I was a young teen. I am so glad our parents moved us out because almost all my neighbor friends got into trouble, got pregnant, locked up, in gangs and expelled from their schools. I am also thankful our parents moved us out.

We're not there quite yet but have noticed new neighbors a block away doing that on their porch. Loud music, kids half naked, flicking their cigs, leaving beer cans on the lawn. They're either renting or just don't give a f*ck about their property.

My parents moved us out of the hood when I was a teen as soon as the bar down the block started having weekly brawls then a shooting happened and the house was on the market that same week. A few months after we moved, a man was gutted right outside a mercado around the corner. I'm so glad they took us away from that environment.

Si, ahora que tenemos hijos, me quiero mudar muy lejos del peligro...hasta si fuera al campo.

Omg how scary! I'm glad you left. There was.a man from Houston who was missing. They found his body in the.river by us. I hate that people are bringing that out to the country where we are

I'd say you know it's time when you get the feeling that it's going to change for the worse. I wouldn't wait for the dead bodies, murders, or anything like that. Why risk it being your family?

I grew up in Philly during a time of drug wars and lots of violence. I saw shoot outs, fights robberies, etc. my parents moved us out when I was about 10. My older brother and sister took it a little harder, they were in their teen years. I am thankful my parents made the choice to move although I missed the family, friends etc. But we lost a lot of loved ones due to the downfall of the neighborhood. It improved for some time but then it got bad again.

Go with your instinct. Start looking to make changes before its too late. With the economy the way it is, it isn't as easy to relocate as it was years ago.
